Hello and welcome to The UK Investor!
Who I am
I’m a former investment manager professional turned former HM Treasury civil servant. I spent over a decade in finance before a “what am I doing with my life” moment circa 2019 led me to the public sector.
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of private markets and public policy, and the links between companies, industries, and countries. My work and personal life has taken me across the Atlantic and back again, twice. I left the Treasury and returned to the US in August 2024 for family reasons, and have set up The UK Investor to keep my brain sharp, to test my ideas and to keep me connected to home.
In my lofty, idealistic moments, I also like to think I’m playing a small role in addressing what can feel like a dearth of content for those investing in the UK, and to tell a more positive story about the UK and its opportunities for growth.
You can find me on LinkedIn here.
What you’ll get by subscribing
I plan to publish weekly posts covering:
Economics and policy: Periodic articles exploring broader trends and events with a UK angle. Mostly I find a question I don’t know the answer to, or a topic that interests me, and write a post to figure it out.
Investing: More practical thoughts on investment strategies with a UK angle, and my personal experience building a UK equity portfolio.
You can also expect regular updates to my A to Z of the FTSE 250, where I’m going alphabetically through all the companies in the index with short summaries of the business, and positive, neutral, negative views.
I started this Substack with zero followers and I’m under no illusions that there’s a lot of great content out there. I’m grateful for anyone who wants to subscribe and I have no plans to charge. Ask me again if I get to 10,000 subscribers.
Who The UK Investor is for
Anyone interested in the above! My target audience isn’t Whitehall mandarins or professional investors, just people who know a little and are interested in learning more. I hope The UK Investor is informative in a simple but not simplistic way.
